VINTAGE THUGWANE QUALIFIES FOR GOTHENBURG 21 KM
Vintage Josia Thugwane, winner of the gold medal in the marathon at the 1996 Olympic
Games in Atlanta, completed the Volvo SwedoCar half marathon in Pretoria on Saturday in
under 65 minutes to qualify for the Gothenburg half marathon in Sweden.
The event at the Union Buildings – which also included a marathon, 10km and 5km – attracted
more than 4 000 runners.
Thugwane ran a superb race to win in 64:51. More than 1 200 runners took part in the
half marathon.
Volvo Car SA announced earlier that they would fly the male winner, if he clocks less than 65
minutes, to Sweden to take part in the prestigious Gothenburg half marathon that takes place on
17 May.
Thugwane was delighted with his performance. His race plan was to push his running
and club mate from Liberty Nike, Collin Khoza, to run under 65 minutes, as Khoza was
eager to go to Sweden.
“At the 19 km mark I realised that my friend was not going to make it and I decided to do it
myself,” said Thugwane afterwards.
Khoza, who finished second in 65:20, was followed by a trio from Harmony Gold –
Oliver Kandeiro (65:47), Helmans Pedi (66:25) and last year’s winner, Samuel Molokomme
(67:19). Molokomme’s winning time last year was 65:38.
Gladys Lukhwareni (Harmony Gold) won the women’s half marathon in 84:39. She was followed by
Natasha Gilliland (Rentmeester Tuks) in 89:03 and Fiddy Gey van Pittius )Liberty Nike) filled
in the third spot with a time of 89:43.
The stalwart from Harmony gold, John Tjale won the marathon for men in 2:48:42. His
club mate, Paulina Phaho, won the women’s race in a good time of 2:57:26. They each
won a R1 000 cash incentive and a gold medal for their fine performances.
Luwis Masunda from Harmony Gold took honours in the 10 km. He won in a fast time of 29:42.
Catherine Mapela won the women’s race in 40:57.
